(Hotel 07) Wicked Wicky

Imagine for a minute, that you're a Japanese business man/woman who just escaped from your daily packed commuter train. You step outside of the station, catch a fresh air(it's all relative right?) and starts to walk, and all of a sudden out of nowhere, this guy sticks a microphone and says something like "Good morning, how are you? (in English of course.) Not only are you startled, but damn it, you have to get to work. Leave me alone!!!!!
Well, that is exactly what used to take place somewhere in Tokyo metro train stations from 1979 until 1994.
The man behind the microphone is Anton Wicky. He was born and raised in Sri Lanka but came to finish his college educations in Japan and later on became a professor as well as a small time celebrity. Anyway, this show was called "Wicky-san's One-point English Conversation" and it must have traumatised many Japanese business men and women alike to have to embarrass themselves in front of cameras. The funny part of the show is to witness some people just literally running away from Wicky-san. He was literally like Moses who can depart the sea of Japanese people in half.

Yes, Wicky-san caught you!

This song by Ayumi Nakamura was a giant hit in 1985-ish and it was a huge "blast from the past" moment for me when I finally realised who she was. Here's her singing the very same song,"Angel with broken wings" in the 80's. Nice bangs!

Enjoy,
Special thanks to Alex for yet another awesome job.

(Hotel 06) Gari Gari kun

When the outside temperature clocks close to your own body temperature, there's nothing better than sucking on the popsicles to help you not melt your eyeballs. Well, that was back when I was a young boy in the 80's. Now, I just whine and complain about it in an air-conditioned room.

This particular popsicles called "Gari Gari kun" was (and still is) very popular in the 80's. This popsicle has the usual outside layer which is cold, smooth and tasty, but the nice surprise is that as you bite into it more, there's a core of slushy iced shaves inside. Very cool idea.

Sometimes, after you suck out the last moisture out of the wooden stick, you find that you get to have another one for free. It would be clearly carved out on the stick like this;

Picture this though. I'm outside (most likely front of Mom and Pop shop)with my friends eating this popsicles. When I'm done, I see that I get a free one. Cool, I immediately exchange the stick with new popsicle, show it off to my friends and devour it as if I hadn't had anything like it before. But then the nightmare sets in. I not only would get the brain freeze from eating two popsicles but I also just gave myself a colon cleanse and detoxing. Let's just say that I would spend the rest of the afternoon by myself.

One of the Gaki No Tsukai episodes had popsicle props called "Gaki Gaki Kun" which was essentially a parody of the "Gari Gari Kun." The manufacture was so thankful of Gaki crew for doing this, it is said that Matsumoto was sent box full of the popsicle thereafter.

Special thanks to Alex.

(Hotel 05) Remember that movie, Ring?

Here's another veteran actress, Bibari Maeda, who can get the Gaki member's laughs rolling. She can also be seen in the "No Laughing Newspaper" series from 2008. I have to say she looks great for being 60-something year old.

Her name Bibari is not a common name in Japan, and it is because her American father originally named her "Beverly." But to make it easier for Japanese to pronounce, it's been changed to Bibari or in kanji characters, it's written like this; 美波里.

Here's Bibari Maeda circa '66

A name that gets mentioned many times in this clip, Yuko Takeuchi, is an actress. You might recognize her from the original Japanese horror movie called Ring (or Ringu.) But that was more than a decade ago. Anyhow, she's appeared in many Japanese TV dramas and movies since then. But most recently, you can catch her in the American TV show called the "Flash Forward" on ABC where she has an recurring role as a....what do you know? A Japanese woman.

NO, nobody will be crawling out of your TV. Stop crying!

And yes, I am on Twitter now. I'm posting anything Gaki related. And if you wanna be kept updated in real time on where I am with subbing, here's your helping hands.

Special thanks goes out to Alex

(Hotle 04) VELOTAXI

Velotaxi is a public transportation system that utilizes hybrid electrical bicycles in (mostly) metro areas. It was started in Berlin, Germany in late 90's before it made its way to the Land of the Rising Sun in early 2000's. Obviously, what's cool about this bicycle is that it has the electrical power to assist you when you're pedaling up the hill or you're lucky enough to give couple of Sumo Wrestlers a ride to the Yakiniku (BBQ) joint. What's also cool is that you can control when to activate/deactivate the "electric assisting power" at your finger tip.

As I understand it, you can catch this bicycle taxis at most of the big cities in Japan. The cost is about $3 per first 0.5km for an adult then 50cents per 0.1km thereafter.

I personally have never utilized this system, but I hear if you got the time, it's a nice ride.

Um sir, I asked for Velotaxi. Nice try though.

(Hotel 03) Deluxe Edition

Another fan favorite, Matsuko Deluxe was an editor for a gay magazine called the "Body" before he became a columnist and some sort of a television personality.

According to my unreliable resource, Deluxe does not dress as a woman outside of television appearances. It is a character he created for the show. Because of his size, all of the wardrobes are custom made by him. And He proudly claims that the clothing material he uses can cover a 25-meter swimming pool. Awesome.

Couple of other ideas for his name before he became "Deluxe" were:
Matsuko Royal
Matsuko International

Long live the Deluxe.

Again, thank you Alex for the coloring, fonts, and positioning.
Enjoy,

(Hotel 02) To be dramatically funny

All of you can agree that it's happening more and more that the Gaki members bust out laughing merely at the sight of actors whom nobody would ever thought doing the "Batsu Series." Let alone them doing something goofy and silly.

That is the case with dramatic actress Mao Daichi portraying the better half of legendary husband-wife comic duo, Hayashiaya Peh and Pahko. Mao Daichi is a well trained actress who started her musical theatrical acting career at the famous Takarazuka Musical Theater Group. She then moved onto doing more TV dramas and movies.

[spoiler alert] Ms. Daichi's musically trained voice can be heard in a form of crazy laughter in this clip.

Here's the real Hayashiya Peh and Pahko by the way

And Ah yes. The grand entrance of fan-favorite wrestler, Mr. Chono.
It's safe to say that only Chono I could beat the crap out of is this figurine of him.

(Hotel 01) Ainori

The TV show called "Ainori" was a popular reality show in Japan which ran for about a dacade. The premise of the show was to have seven young single guys and girls travel around the world in this awefully painted pink van.

As you can imagine, traveling together creates romance. So the catch of the show was that one can express their feeling for someone on the bus, and once you do, no matter what the other person says, you are to fly back to Japan, either alone or if she/he has feelings for you, then you get to fly back together and be married and have kids, grow old together, and have many grandkids.

Anyhow, I hope this helps you understand the Fujiwara entrace in this clip a bit.

Special thanks to Alex for his help.

Also, keep checking the fan site www.gaki-no-tsukai.com for the complete sub.

Happy New Year

Happy new year.
My guess is most of you have already seen the new Gaki no tsukai: No Laughing Hotel man(or employees.)
I have seen almost half of it myself, and will be subbing very shortly.
But more importantly, this time around, I have a lot of help from a kind soul named Alex. He'll be taking on the duty of timing, coloring, and adjusting fonts. And thus, we're hoping to expedite the subbing process(fingers crossed.)
So, thank you, Alex.

In a meantime, there are people out there already subbing the new batsu, so keep an eye out for that. But for those with patience, stay tuned for my next blog.

Thanks,
