I spent some time working with kids in the Japanese public school system. One thing that really struck me was how well a lot of them could draw. I hate to stereotype an entire race like that, so let's just say this is a very subjective opinion of my own that has absolutely no scientific backing. Of course, I also saw kids drawing stuff that was average or just plain bad. But more often than not, there were kids drawing at a skill level higher than I would have expected for their age. For example, a classroom of second graders wrote notes to me with pictures of people and animals that I just thought had more detail and accuracy than your typical second grader in the States.

So when I first watched this Japanese variety show with celebrities who can't draw, I wasn't surprised. The way I see it, your average Japanese person can draw a pretty good gorilla or lion. Maybe it's not that fancy, but it looks like what it's supposed to be. The celebs showcased on this show don't have that skill, so the Japanese viewer can sit back and think, "Wow, I draw better than that guy!" and get a real big kick out of it. Disagree with me if you will, but this show wouldn't be as funny here in the States because many of us would think, "I would totally draw the tiger the exact same horrible way!"

If it's true that Japanese, when compared to other cultures, can draw better, then you may be tempted to ask, "Why is that the case?". Here's my theory: kids in the Japanese public school system get a lot more art time than what most public schools allow in the States. So the answer would be as simple as that--you can draw better if you got more art time in school.

Now sit back and enjoy the show! And, for those of you who have spent time in Japan, let me know if you've noticed the same thing....

Here's another video from the variety show 探偵ナイトスクープ or "Knight Scoop."

In 1995, Nike released a shoe called "Air Max 95" in Japan. And for reasons I can't remember, these shoes became so popular that the high demand drove up the shoe's price to an unprecedented level (I've heard anywhere from $600 to upwards of $2,000).

Subsequently, groups of delinquent kids emerged throughout Japan to engage in a criminal activity called
エアマックス狩り, or "Air Max Hunting", where they targeted someone wearing the shoes, beat them up, and snatched their coveted Air Max 95's for a profit.

Thankfully, the phenomenon of beating up people for expensive shoes has pretty much disappeared in Japan, the reason being that shoes don't have the crazy mark up values that were seen in the mid-90's.

The pilot of MHK (Matsumoto Hitoshi Konto) aired on October 15, 2010 with lukewarm TV ratings of 6.2%
This is the first skit of the five skits aired that night. It evokes many head-tilting "huh?" with laughs which Matsumoto does best in his comedy.

A day after MHK aired, a documentary, which chronicles the making of MHK, premiered. The documentary shows the time, energy, and dedication Matsumoto put forth for his skits in a midst of all the other obligations he has.

Before Ashton Kutcher's "Punk'd" dominated the MTV, there was どっきりカメラ or "Dokkiri Camera" in Japan back in the early 80's, pranking many celebrities for for us audience to have a chuckle or two.

I would hate to say that the show was rigged, but one of their more famous pranks, which involved a man(pictured above) sneaking into a celebrity's hotel at an ungodly hour to wake them up, would sometimes show a cute female celebrity being waken up with a perfect make-up on.

If you ever visit Osaka, Japan, you will most likely try its staple dishes like たこ焼き Takoyaki (ball-shaped Japanese dumpling will grilled octopus inside) or お好み焼き Okonomiyaki

But Another famous Osaka dish, which originated in China, is 豚まん Butaman, or Pork Bun. And if you ask any Osaka people who sells the more popular Pork buns, they will tell you "551蓬莱", or "551Horai." You can find one of their many shops throughout Osaka but not in Tokyo area.

How awesome is Bibimbap? Please excuse the Wikipedia excerpt, but I can't explain the dish better than this:

(From Wikipedia) Bibimbap (Korean pronunciation: pibimbap) is a signature Korean dish. The word literally means "mixed meal." Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chili pepper paste). A raw or fried egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are common additions. The ingredients are stirred together thoroughly just before eating. It can be served either cold or hot.

In Japan, you can order bibimbap at almost any 焼肉屋 Yakinikuya, or BBQ restaurant.

Here's a Japanese dish that you might want to know about before you watch the video. A little spoiler but it might help you understand and appreciate the video better.

もんじゃ焼き - Monjyayaki (often called もんじゃ - Monjya) is a pan fried batter with various chopped up vegetables and meat. If you're familiar with お好み焼き - Okonomiyaki, think of Monjyayaki as runnier version of Okonomiyaki.

This small clip is just a snippet of what’s included in his five DVD collections series titled おしゃべり大好きOshaberi Daisuki (I love to talk).

To many of us, he’s just being a “stand up comedian.” But what’s interesting to me is that HE IS BEING the stand up comedian. And because Manzai, where two guys talk on stage, is the norm in the Japanese comedy world, I thought this is an interesting piece.

The show originally aired in December, 2004 and since, it's been the staple "special" program every 4 months or so.

The casts sit around what appears to be a larger blackjack table with Matsumoto acting as the dealer.

This one is from their 5th Anniversary DVD. Please note that I have only translated the ones I like.

伝染るんです-"Usturun Desu" is a title of hilarious series of short manga strips created by 吉田戦車-Yoshida Sensha. This series ran on Big Comic Spirits from '89 to '94 and is filled with weird characters with unconventional humor which often evoked many "WTF" with laughs especially from younger people.

The following is more of a straight forward one but I'll see if I can work on more weird ones in a future.

温泉(Onsen) - Spa or hot springs is an integral part of Japanese culture. Each hot springs boast of their unique mineral compositions and are known to have certain healing powers. Read more about the Onsen here via Wikipedia.

熱海市(City of Atami) is located in southern 静岡県(Shizuoka prefecture) and is widely known as the beach town/hot spring. Its close proximity(relatively speaking) from Tokyo attracts abundance of weekend goers and packs the beach. And when I say packed with people, it's so packed I would go, "I can't even see any sand!?"

And I have wrote a little about Jyanken (rock, paper, scissors) back when I was working on the Hotel Series.

This short documentary observes one man's specific collection. I'll try not to spoil anything here but this is a painful remainder of how much your childhood experience emotionally affect you for the rest of your life. In his case, the act of collecting is essentially acting as his therapist.

I made sure this man is doing OK since this documentary was filmed in the city of Sendai where the recent earthquake and the tsunami hit. And thankfully, he is alive and doing alright according to his personal website.

By the way, I used to collect knickknacks. Just anything that caught my eyes. And I started collecting guitars but it quickly died since they can be very expensive (duh?)

Because I still can't seem to detach myself from Hitoshi Matsumoto, here's a documentary which chronicles how Matsumoto created a short comedy film targeted for an American audience.

I don't necessarily agree with Matsumoto's view on American comedy, but it's certainly interesting to observe how Japanese comedian (a great one at that) analyzes American comedy. I also understand it's not fair to criticize Mr. Matsumoto since he didn't have enough time to do serious research. Case in point, the movie "Lost in Translation" had a scene where Bill Murray appears on a Japanese TV show. The show had a lot of flashy prime colors with wacky faces yelling and screaming in Japanese. When I first saw it, I didn't think much of it, but I suppose that's how she and many people outside of Japan perceived Japanese television shows.

With the exception of physical comedy, I don't think you can truly appreciate a different country's sense of humor unless you understand, in addition to their language and culture, all the different nuances associated with their comedy. A couple of years ago, I watched a video of British comedian, whose name I won't reveal, and not only did I have hard time understanding his accent, but even when I did understand his jokes, I wasn't laughing as loud as his massive audience. I know it's because I'm not a British citizen, so I don't have the same "funny bone" they do--just as Matsumoto references in the documentary.

My quest to conquer the animation world with a translation of the first episode of "Black Jack" failed after I found out someone has already done it. (and it's really well done, I might add)

Perhaps the subbing God is hinting me to "ease" into another genre to work on.

Fortunately, I found a clip of my favorite comic, Itao Itsuji, doing what he does best--delivering off-beat jokes without cracking a smile. What more do you need? He even performs this skit in the traditional 落語 Rakugo style. I wrote a little bit about Rakugo for a "Hotel" batsu episode.

We All Need a Change Sometimes

This post isn't to tell you I'm falling off the face of the earth or anything. It's actually to make the following announcement:

I have decided that I won't be translating Gaki No Tsukai videos anymore.

It has been a fun two years, but just like anything in life, you get bored with stuff after a while. And frankly, I want blogging to feel like a fun hobby--not another job. My blog's title "My translations are almost always perfct" will remain the same. So I'm still up for translating Japanese media from time to time, but it just won't be related to Gaki No Tsukai. Who knows? I might take on a documentary or two. Or even an old, cheesy Japanese classic drama series. The possibilities are endless, and I'm excited about the change.

I hope my translations did Gaki No Tsukai the justice it deserves. And I hope, as a result of my work, the show now has more international fans.

I am very grateful and humbled to have accumulated so many followers in the past two years, and I'm sorry if you're not happy with my decision. But we all have to move on to new challenges sometimes. As the cliché goes, "I'm going out at the top of my *Batsu* game." Well, you know what I mean.

桃太郎 Momotaro, or Peach Boy, is a famous Japanese folklore hero. A word "Momo 桃" means "peach" and a word "Taro 太郎" used to be a common boy's name.

The millet dumplings that appear in the story are called きびだんご kibidango (millet cakes). These are made like mochi (rice cakes) but instead of rice they use millet. They were really soft and covered with kinako (powdered soy bean).

焼酎 Soju is a clear, distilled alcoholic beverage manufactured in Korea. Soju has been around for many centuries and remains one of the most popular Asian alcohols, especially in South Korea.

Seiji Chihara (千原せいじ) is one half of a Manzai duo called "Chirara Kyoudai" (千原兄弟) or "Chirara Brothers". It's not uncommon to see real life siblings as members of a Manzai duo. We have seen Chihara Junior, the other member of the duo, in the "No Laughing" Hotel and Police series.

村上ショージ Murakami Shoji. I wrote a little about him here.

Nakagawa Ke (中川家) is another Manzai duo comprised of two brothers. In this clip, Reiji, one of the brothers, poses as the Chairman of the Wrestling Association. His act is my absolute favorite part of the show this year (check out 9:33-10:37). I watched it over and over and laughed my butt off every time. My wife can attest to this.

吉本新喜劇　Yoshimoto Shinkigeki is an established, well-known sketch theater in Osaka. Many famous comics performed here in their younger days, including Matsumoto and Hamada from Downtown. In fact, a variety show called "Lincoln" recently filmed an episode where Downtown and other popular comedians took the stage at the Shinkigeki and semi-improvised their way through a sketch. It had been almost 20 years since Downtown last did a show there, and you can see they were awfully nervous.

The show, which features many veterans, tends to recycle their "one-punch-line" jokes over and over in recycled plots each week. But I suppose that's what the audience (mainly older folks) enjoy. The material is really safe and never too over the top.

Amazingly, the show runs twice daily and three times on the weekend. It's televised locally (Osaka/Kansai Area) on Saturday and Sunday.

Having grown up in Osaka, I know a lot of the "recycled" jokes and it's hard to believe some have been around for more than two decades (maybe more). One of the things you notice as you watch this clip is how the cast members fall to the ground in reaction to someone telling a joke or delivering a punchline. Falling down is expected and actually completes the whole joke.

On a personal note, when I'm back in Japan and I happen to catch this show on TV, it first makes me realize it's the weekend and second, that I'm back home.

Following guests who appears in this sketch show are the regular of the "No Laughing" series but not the regular at the aforementioned Yoshimoto Shinkigeki.

Panzetta Girolamo - a celebrity born September 6, 1962 in Avellino, Italy. He lives in Japan and has been on Japanese TV starring in everything from dramas to cooking shows. He has also made appearances in fashion magazines. He owns a restaurant called "Ristorante Giromondo" in Gaienmae. Panzetta was the voice of the Italian car in the Japanese version of the American movie "Cars". He is also the author of several books and essays. (From Wikipedia)

田中将大　Masahiro Tanaka - He's an ace pitcher for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. He's known as "Mah-kun," "Mah,"and "Mah-san" among his fans.

梅宮クラウディア　Claudia Umemiya - Wife of actor Tatsuo Umemiya. They have both appeared on the past three "No Laughing" series. She is now known for her awful acting and for always forgetting her lines.

ハリセン　A harisen is a large fan made of thick construction paper. It's often used to smack people upside the head at comedy shows. If it's made with care(?), you can get a really loud "popping noise" when it smacks someone's head at just the right angle.

胴上げ　Douage, or "Body Toss", is a commonly done by Japanese sports players who toss their coach up in the air after a winning game. Douage happens when the team wins a championship or something really significant, not just a regular season game. I assume it's not commonly done outside of Japan. I suppose in the US, you can compare it to the "Gatorade Shower."

柴田理恵 Rie Shibata is a comic/actor/TV personality, and no, I'm not related to her.

Once you realize the officer in this clip is Dutch, most of you will be asking yourselves, "Why did they use a Dutch officer?"

Dutch officers are known for their ability to assign simple tasks in a harsh and direct way, and they don’t tolerate any resistance. If you look away or if you don’t respond quickly enough, you’ll get an earful from the officer followed by threats of punishment for your behavior.

Even knowing this about Dutch officers, I don’t really know why they chose one for this part. I can think of many other countries that have even stricter police academies than ours. Maybe they like our language or the way the threats sound.

Nonetheless, the result is still the same--funny as hell!

Most of the actors you see in this clip starred in dramas from the 80's. The exception is Gaki Producer, Yoshinobu Nakamura, who seems to enjoy making random appearances in the "No Laughing" series.

黒田アーサー Arthur Kuroda and 沢村　一樹　Ikki Sawamura are veteran actors. Jesus, I can't believe Ikki is 43 years old.

かたせ梨乃 Rino Katase
仁支川峰子　Mineko Nishikawa

The two actresses who appear in this clip are known for their work in the film titled 極道の妻たち Gokudou No Tsumatachi-"Wives of Yakuzas". I think they've made about 15 movies with the same title since the 80's. Take that, Friday the 13th!

The movie's innovative plot portrays the lives of Yakuza from a woman's perspective.

岡田圭右　Keisuke Okada

The guy who appears in the "All-American" red, white, and blue outfit is one half of the Manzai duo called "Masuda Okada". He does lots of one-liners in his really loud voice. He's kind of old school and I can't help but laugh (at) with him.

中村雅俊　Masatoshi Nakamura
He plays the director in this clip, and as you can see from Hamada's reaction, he has been both an actor and a singer in the Japanese entertainment industry for the past four decades.
Here's one of his more famous songs called "Fureai". Awesome.

轟二郎 Jiro Todoroki
He might be the original "Jackass" guy. Back in the 80's, he was known as "Challenge Boy" in a show called "Surprising Japanese Records" where contestants would compete against each other in silly races and contests. Mr. Todoroki usually played the part of the "guinea pig" who had to try the home-made airplane or other not-so-state-of-the-art machines. Here's an old clip of the show. No, kids, you don't need 3D glasses to view this.

金太郎　Kintarō
Kintarō is a boy from Japanese folklore who is known to have possessed a Superman-like strength. He was also raised by mountain animals and a kick-ass Sumo wrestler. I would compare him to Tarzan. But Kintaro deserves more points with his daring fashion sense: A bright red triangle-shaped bib. You can find Kinataro figurines in many Japanese households on Boy's Day (May 5th) every year. They are prominently displayed by the family who hope that their son won't grow up to be a wuss. And not wear a red triangle-shaped bib to school.

ドカベン Dokaben
Dokaben is a popular manga series about a high-school baseball team published way, way back (1972 - 1981). "Dokaben" is the nickname for catcher Taro Yamada who, in this clip, is depicted by everyone's favorite Matsuko Deluxe. ドカ! or "Doka!" is an onomatopoeia to describe the appearance of a large object while ベン or "ben" is taken from the word 弁当, Bento. Put them together and get Doka-ben or "Enormously Huge Bento Box" - which is what Dokaben used to carry with him to school in the story.

梅宮辰夫 Tatsuo Umemiya
As far as I know, this is his annual gig now. He's appeared on at least past three or four "No Laughing" series. I wrote a little about him here. In this clip, his initial impersonation is that of サカナ君, or Fish Boy who I wrote about here

Because of mochi's extremely sticky texture, there is usually a small number of choking deaths around New Year in Japan, particularly amongst the elderly. The death toll is reported in newspapers in the days after New Year

This is the subbing team's first project translating some footage of the Hotel Man series that wasn't originally aired on New Year's Eve last year.
Let's go over a couple of things that might help you understand the clips a little better(?)

The song sung by Crystal King is called 愛を取り戻せ, Aio Torimodose (Take the love back.)
It was an opening song for the popular anime 北斗の拳, Hokuto No Ken (Fist of North Star) a while back.

And let us not forget about a child prank called カンチョー, or Kancho. I love the fact that there's a Wiki write up about this:
Kancho (カンチョー, kanchō?)is a prank often played in Japan; it is performed by clasping the hands together so the index fingers are pointing out and attempting to insert them sharply into someone's anal region when the victim is not looking. It is similar to the wedgie or a goosing, although, as compared to kancho, the formerly mentioned acts do not involve physical contact which is quite as intimate or direct. A Kancho is often executed simultaneously as the offending party loudly emphasizes the second syllable of "Kan-CHO!". From Wikipedia.

As a child who grew up in Japan, yes, I am guilty of performing this weird ritual back then. My wife who spent time teaching in Japanese elementary schools was horrified when she first witnessed this prank. I don't blame her.

One discrepancy I should point out between what I mention in a podcast and the above wiki link is that the wiki article describes the "kachi kachi" as a sound of fire crackling whereas I remember kachi kachi as someone using flint rocks.

桃太郎 Momotarô, Peach Boy
Check out this interactive story of Momotaro.

The following is my best attempt in making the correlation between Momotarô story and the table of Chinese zodiac signs.

The Ogre castle is in the NorthEast, which in Japanese folklore is traditionally where evil spirits reside. It also happens to be the place where the ox and the tiger are in the zodiac table. Notice how the northeasterly-living ogre has the horns of an ox and wears a tiger-striped loincloth.

Momotarô resides on the opposite side of the Ogre castle, or the SouthWest portion of the zodiac table. You can see that the animal friends (monkey, pheasant, and dog) he meets on the way to fight the ogre are also positioned on the SouthWesterly side of the table.

Coincidence? I think not.

It is Official: No Laughing - Spy 2010

OK, it's official. According to this website, the Gaki members trained to become spies for this year's New Year's special. The following is a rough translation of the Japanese article:

After filming was over, Matsumoto was quoted as saying; "We sort of worked as a team.....but I was the only one carrying the team towards the end."

Close to 100 celebrities helped to trick the Gaki members into laughing during the filming--Matsuko Deluxe and Tatsuo Umemiya included.

In addition to already impossible challenges, new rules went into effect for the cast members after midnight such as "Don't Get Scared" and "Don't Get Caught."

Unchanged from last year, viewers may continue to submit their real time messages via the Gaki mobile phone site. Viewers this year can also send messages via Twitter (@Gakitsukatter).

The show's producers finally settled on Ibaraki prefecture as the film site after two months of scouting. More than 100 extras were on location.

After filming, cast members had the following to say:
Hamada: "We finished it without losing anyone."
Yamasaki: "My butt went through hell."
Endo: "Learning to be a spy was difficult. We pulled through as a team."
Tanaka: "It was hard but we helped each other until the end."

純とろ　Jyuntoro is a dried kelp shaving
Shaving is seasoned with sugar and vinegar. When eaten as a soup, it literally just dissolves in your mouth. It is definitely an acquired taste as with many Japanese dish.

We're continuing this week with "Japanese phrases you can shout out with feeling." Perhaps you can try these phrases at your nearby shopping mall. My wife and I also discuss about a widely known Japanese fairy tale called 浦島太郎 - Urashima Taro. Mind you, this isn't your typical Dr. Seuss material. It's a twisted and weird tale, and I believe I was exposed to this story at an early age, way before a healthy brain injections of Godzilla, Mothra, and King Gidra. Oh boy, am I glad there was no Pikachu back then.

I f$%& love curry. If curry is the only food left on this earth, I would be fine with it.
As you can see in this clip, there are so many different "instant curries" available in Japan.

When I say "instant," it means all you have to do is to heat up the pouch in boiling water for 3-5 minutes, open the pouch carefully, and pour it over a bed of rice.

Most preferred side added to the curry dish is 福神漬(Fukujinzuke) which is picked vegetable roots(surprise.)

I personally prefer to make curry from the "curry block" like this one, but when you're in hurry, you can't beat the quickness of the "instant curry."

ごはんですよ　Gohan Desuyo:

Gohan Desuyo is basically a seaweed in a paste form. Now, this might sound gross to some of you, and I can understand that this is definitely an "acquired taste." But trust me, once you can get over the first bite of this with rice (maybe a second bite,) you will learn to enjoy its salty flavor. It's kind of like your first experience of smoking a cigarette. (No?)

May I say that there's a slight resemblance between Gohan Desuyo and Marmite?

酒粕　Sake Kasu:
What is Sake Kasu? Or, in this clip, it's translated as "Sake Lees."
Following is a small excerpt from esake.com but if you want to know more about it please do so here

What is sake kasu? In short, sake lees. After a tank of sake has run the course of its fermentation - anywhere from 18 to 32 days - what remains is a white mixture of sake and the solids that did not or could not be fermented. This mixture, known as the moromi throughout its fermenting phase, must now be pressed to separate the almost-clear sake from the suspended solids.

フグ　Fugu:

Fugu or blowfish (pufferfish) has been consumed by Japanese for centuries (although there were a couple of periods when the Fugu was prohibited for consumption.) As you might have already know, Fugu contains lethal amount of poison in its liver and ovaries, thus needs to be prepared by a licensed cook before it can be served. According to Wikipedia, The poison, a sodium channel blocker, paralyzes the muscles while the victim stays fully conscious, eventually dying from asphyxiation. There is no known antidote. And we eat this because......?? Well, I personally enjoy having some Fugu here and there just to test my manliness.

The most popular way of serving Fugu is in sashimi form. It is often called "Tessa," as shown in this video clip. A Fugu chef is capable of slicing pieces so thin you can usually see through your friend being asphyxiated on the other side of the dinner table.

Let us learn about this Japanese custom known as 節分 Setsubun.
Here's excerpt taken shamelessly from Wikipedia:

Setsubun (Bean-Throwing Festival or Bean-Throwing Ceremony) is the day before the beginning of each season in Japan. The name literally means "seasonal division", but usually the term refers to the spring Setsubun, properly called Risshun (立春) celebrated yearly on February 3 as part of the Spring Festival (春祭, haru matsuri?). In its association with the Lunar New Year, Spring Setsubun can be and was previously thought of as a sort of New Year's Eve, and so was accompanied by a special ritual to cleanse away all the evil of the former year and drive away disease-bringing evil spirits for the year to come. This special ritual is called mamemaki (豆撒き, lit. bean throwing).

And here's what's up with the sushi rolls in this clip.

It is customary now to eat uncut makizushi called Eho-Maki (恵方巻) (lit. "lucky direction roll") in silence on Setsubun while facing the yearly lucky compass direction, determined by the zodiac symbol of that year. Charts are published and occasionally packaged with uncut makizushi during February. Some families will also put up small decorations of sardine heads and holly leaves on their house entrances so that bad spirits will not enter.

Let me try to explain the differences of the following suffixes:
さん　San
ちゃん Chan
君 or くん Kun

君Kun and さんSan are used after a first name OR last name. ちゃんChan is principally placed after the first name ONLY.

君 can be used when speaking to a male junior in your office,
a fellow classmate at in your school, a close male friend, or a little boy.

さん is the most commonly used suffix. It’s safe to use this with all parties, but would sound strange if used by adults addressing children or teenagers.

ちゃん is used with small children or to show your affection or friendliness to a younger woman. It is also used with close friends who are females.

Another Japanese Lesson is a continuation from the Lesson 05
お勘定お願いします。 Okanjyo Onegai shimasu (Check please)
会計お願いします。 Okaikei Onegai shimasu (Check please)

Or, you can use the word レジ which is read Reji, which came from an English word "register."

WHERE IS (NOUN)?

(Noun) can be any of the followings:

* Train Station – Eki, 駅、えき

* Subway – Chika-tetsu、地下鉄、ちかてつ

* Taxi – Takushi、タクシー

* Train – Densha、電車、でんしゃ

* Bathroom – Toire、トイレ

Some of the phrases you want to keep your ears open for:

Just ahead - Konosaki、この先、このさき
Go straight - Massugu、まっすぐ
Right - Migi、右、みぎ
Left - Hidari、左、ひだり
To turn - Magaru、まがる
In front of - no Mae、の前

Many of you are familiar with counting in Japanese “Ichi, Nii, San, Shii, Go, Roku....etc”

Two system of counting:
1. “Counter” system or “Unit” system where specific “unit” is added to the above counting “Ichi, Nii, San”
For example, "Three dogs" would be 三匹 or さんびき　or San Biki where Biki indicates an animal. Let me confuse you even more, the reading of Biki changes to Hiki when you're counting two, four, five, seven, and nine as in Nii Hiki, Yon Hiki, Go Hiki and so on. Anyhow, there are counters for virtually anything; people; animals; books/magazines; clothing; planes; houses; small boats; large ships

2. More generic ones we discussed on Podcast Lesson 02: “Hitotsu, Futatsu, Mittsu, Yottsu, Itsutsu, Muttsu," which works majority of times in counting anything. And let me tell you, knowing the "Hitotsu, Futatsu and etc," will automatically brands you as One-step-above-other-Gaijin.

This interview was conducted more than a decade ago. But it gives us a little glimpse into the mind of Hitoshi Matsumoto of Downtown. Just a quick warning, there's no funny stuff in this clip.

*"Gottsu Ee Kanji" was a popular skits show that Matsumoto was involved in early 90's. When Matsumoto says, "An incident of Gottsu Ee Kanji," he means of how his relationship with Fuji television, who used to air an aforementioned show, has turned sour after the Fuji television decided to air a baseball play-off game over "Gottsu Ee Kanji-Special Edition" that Matsumoto was obviously heavily involved in. It is said that the Matsumoto was not notified of their decision until the very last minute, and that pissed him off enough to boycott to appear on Fuji-related shows afterward.

(Hotel pt 28) Here's how to cool off

One of the things we used to do, as children growing up in Japan during the hot humid summer night, was to tell a scary and chilling stories to "cool off." Of course, it doesn't literally cool us off, but it was a thing to do especially in the get-together setting like camping.

The basic premise of the film "Ring" or "Ringu" where the ghost with "unfinished business" comes back to haunt the family or two is nothing new. As a matter of fact, the most famous ghost story told in Japan called "Yotsuya Kaidan" was written back in 1825. Here's more about it if you are interested. Many people seem to enjoy the "Don't be scared" segment of the 24 hour series.
Maybe next year, they should just do the night segment of it.

くいだおれ人形　or Kuidaore Ningyou is　this mechanical drum playing doll that resides in front of the restaurant called "Kuidaore." Anybody who visits Osaka usually gets the chance to take a picture with him. He's been there since the 50's but the restaurant has recently closed and the Kuidaore Ningyou is to be removed (someone, please verify this, please?)

This clip shows many half-naked men in the end-of-the-year-bash setting. Their group is called the 豆しぼり、MameShibori, which is a specific type of design in hand towel. It's a simple design of many aligned dots like this photo.

The word 豆、Mame, means "bean." Thus, the dots represents this bean-like design.

Hand towel has many uses in Japan. First and foremost, It can be used to protect your neck from a sudden dagger attack.

And it can personalize your favorite whisky bottle as well as to protect it from a sudden dagger attack.

Let's see what the States are doing with this fine product.

I have talked about Manzai before in this following blog if you haven't read it.

One guy in Manzai duo plays the part of "being stupid, or air-headed," while the other guy would point out his/her error usually by yelling at him/her in funny ways.

Matsumoto of Downtown usually is this "being stupid" guy in Downtown while Hamada's the one to put Matsumoto in his place by pointing out Matsumoto's "stupid-ness" or "error." Hamada's preferred method of correcting his partner is to smack Matsumoto in his head, sometimes pretty hard. They've been doing this since the 80's and it has become Hamada's staple move even when he's not doing Manzai talk with Matsumoto. Many of the guests on Hamada's TV show would be feared (or anticipate) to be smacked by Hamada sometime during the show.

What a life it must be to get paid by smacking people in their heads.

I'd imagine many of you already know who Takeshi Kitano is.

I love the story about how his directorial debut has come about.
Here's the excerpt from Wiki;
After several other roles, mostly comedic, in 1989 he was cast as the lead in Violent Cop (Sono Otoko, Kyōbō ni Tsuki), playing a sociopathic detective who responds to every situation with violence. When the original director (Kinji Fukasaku) fell ill, Kitano offered to step in, and rewrote the script heavily. The result was a financial and critical success in Japan, and the beginning of Kitano's career as a filmmaker.

I understand he's very popular in Europe especially in France. I personally miss him being the comedian, but hey, his talent shouldn't go wasted.

Who else would you have wear this ridiculous outfit other than Yamasaki?

I feel like the production team milked this bit for all its worth. I understand that it was a rainy day on the day of this shoot, and some of the outside activities weren't possible so the team had to resort to something indoors, like this.

By the way, the helmet worn by Yamasaki is called "Kabuto" in Japanese. It is a traditional armor used to be worn by Samurai.

(Hotel pt 23) Quick announcement

I'm keeping my tradition of being stylishly one step behind the rest of the world by starting our own podcast soon. I'm saying "our" because I'm dragging my wife into this.

I will be test running a podcast sometime soon. So feel free to shoot me with any questions. I will answer them in my test run podcast.

As you could have guessed, my wife and I will (try to) deliver a series of Japanese language lessons for those planning a trip to Japan. I will also throw in lesser known facts about Japanese cultures and traditions along the way.

If time permits, I might even tackle Kansai-ben lessons. Kansai-ben is a dialect spoken mainly around the Osaka regions, and you all have been exposed to it by watching many hours of Gaki videos.

We'll try to keep each podcasts very brief as everyone has a little time to spare these days.

For Japan-savvy folks, this is nothing new, but for those who aren't, Japanese customarily say a phrase before and after each meal: いただきます( Ita da ki masu) for before the meal and ごちそうさま(Gochi sou sama) for after the meal.

Of course, I didn't think too much about this when I was living there. I was merely doing "what I was supposed to do." I got the chuckles when I looked it up on Wiki and it translated the "Ita da ki masu" as "I humbly receive." I guess that's what it is, but it just sounds odd and funny to me. Anyhow, the phrase delivers thanks to all the people involved to make the meals possible. Oh, and don't forget to put your hands together as you say these phrases. It can make you a cooler Gaijin.

You can hear "Ita da ki masu" more than a couple of times in this clip. Phonically, it won't sound like how I had it spelled but hope you can at least spot when they say this.

And thank you to those giving us more information on certain celebrities whom miss to explain. It helps me, too.

Anyhow, I wanted to talk about the Manga(cartoon) culture in Japan. Just like Cobra, many of the (TV)animation starts off as a part of series in weekly published Manga magazine. The magazine would usually have a dozen or so series written by different cartoonist/writer. As a youngster, I would buy Shonen Jump every week. And I mean every week because if I missed one week, I'd be very lost in the plot the next week. But what's amazing is the fact that these cartoonists/writers never missed their deadlines. Every Friday (or was it Thursday?) the story continued. I can hardly keep my blog up every week. And of course, to be able to make it to these magazine was one thing, but to STAY in the magazine was much harder. If your series aren't well received right off the bat, you'd better at least think of a cool way to kill off your main character because here's your publisher axing your series in a couple of weeks.

I wonder if kids nowadays are just as into these weekly magazines like I did back then. I feel old but there was no internet to be constantly entertained back then, you know?

Some of the more famous animations you may know like DragonBall and the Fist of the North Star, started out as a weekly series in Shonen Jump back in 80's.
One side note, Shonen Jump is now published monthly in English via Viz Media to the United States citizens. I believe I've applied to Viz Media for a job once. And no, I didn't get the job. Thanks a lot.

If you've seen the Batsu Game "Hospital" series, you might remember the radio exercise instructor Egashira 2:50. Yes, he's all about the physical comedy. It's cool because you don't need to know Japanese to appreciate what he does.
